What are the problematic substances in the food supplements market? Which substances are often subject to adulteration, and which are under investigation by the Authorities in terms of safety concerns? How should companies ensure product safety and what are some of the substances restricted for use in foods both globally and specifically in the EU? 

Disruption in supply chains caused by Covid-19 and geopolitical crises, have increased opportunities for food fraudsters and criminals. It therefore remains of great importance that companies maintain vigilance in relation to the ingredients they are purchasing and set up testing protocols for substances of concern.

In addition, the regulatory landscape is continuously evolving. For example, a growing number of substances in the EU fall within the scope of Art 8 of Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. According to this article, certain ingredients with nutritional and/or physiological effects are being evaluated for safety of use, following an assessment from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The substances under review are being either prohibited, allowed under specific conditions of use, or put under further scrutiny. In 2022 the EU has, for example, restricted the use of monacolins from red yeast rice in the EU by establishing the maximal dosage, and regulating that mandatory warnings be put on the label1.

The Compliance, Food Safety and Food Fraud themed webinar will provide case studies by regulatory experts on the substances under scrutiny, as well providing examples of adulteration, and highlighting testing methods to ensure product safety. It will further explore the importance of risk assessments and reflect upon what the future of food fraud prevention may look like.
